Advanced Studies Institute (ASI)

Introduction

Introduction to the Program

In the last decade enormous progress has been made in the design, synthesis, characterization, and applications of materials with atomic dimensions. A wide variety of scientifically and technologically interesting nanostructured materials have been synthesized and investigated. Investigations of the mechanical, chemical, electrical, magnetic, and optical behavior of nanostructured materials have demonstrated the possibilities to engineer the properties of these new materials through control of the sizes of their constituent building blocks and the manner in which these constituents are assembled. It is quite clear that through such nanostructuring, novel materials’ properties can now be accessed in a revolutionary manner.

These new developments are redefining the frontiers of materials science for the 21st century requiring new rapid and effective approaches for the education and training of diverse scientists, engineers, and graduate students in the rapidly expanding cross-disciplinary areas of nanomaterilas and nanotechnology.

The Ras Al Khaimah Centre for Advanced Materials (RAK-CAM) has established an Advance Studies Institute (ASI) to provide education and training in the cutting edge research of advanced materials. This intensive short course on “Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology” is the first course offered by the ASI of RAK-CAM.

Congratulations to Professor Richard H. Friend

The 2009 King Faisal Award in Science

Professor Richard H. Friend pioneered the physics and engineering of semi-conductor devices made of plastic materials. The fabrication of these devices and circuits by ink jet printing that he has introduced is radically different from the traditional manufacturing technology and has paved the way for the development of a wide range of applications of plastic electronic and photonic devices.

WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR 1429H - 2009G KING FAISAL INTERNATIONAL PRIZE for Science

Riyadh, Monday 29 Muharram 1430H occurring 26 January 2009G, HRH Prince Khalid Alfaisal, Director of The King Faisal Foundation, tonight announced the winners of the King Faisal International Prize.

The King Faisal International Prize for Science (Physics) for the year 1429H / 2009G has been awarded jointly to:

Richard H Friend
Rashid Alievich Sunyaev
Professor Sir Richard Henry Friend (uk)

Curriculum Vitae
Professor Rashid Alievich Sunyaev

Chief Scientist, Space Research Institute, Russian Academy of Science and Director, Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics, Germany
Curriculum Vitae

Professor Richard Friend pioneered the physics and engineering of semi- conductor devices made of plastic materials. The fabrication of these devices and circuits by ink jet printing that he has introduced is radically different from the traditional manufacturing technology and has paved the way for the development of a wide range of applications of plastic electronic and photonic devices.

Professor Rashid Sunyaev has made pioneering and fundamental contributions to astrophysics and cosmology. His theoretical work on the cosmic background radiation laid the foundation for the observational exploration of the structure of galaxies and the universe. His work on black holes and binary stars was critical in advancing the field of x-ray astronomy.
